Springfield Animal Hospital

History of Springfield Animal Hospital

Springfield Animal Hospital is a well-established, full-service, AAHA certified small animal veterinary hospital providing comprehensive medical, surgical and dental care.

The hospital was built in the early 1960’s by the late Dr. Glenn Noffisinger. Springfield was just developing into a bedroom community and Shirley Highway (Rt. 95) was a dual expressway between Woodbridge and Washington D.C. Old Keene Mill Road was a rural road to an undeveloped Burke. Development on Loisdale Road forced Noffsinger Animal Hospital to move to the present location on Backlick Road.

In July of 1990, Dr. Michael Bissell purchased the hospital. Soon after, the hospital’s name was changed to the Springfield Animal Hospital (“SAH”). You may still hear people refer to SAH as Noffsinger Animal Hospital.

SAH offers a full range of services to our clientele. We offer grooming, boarding, surgery, dentistry, client education and digital radiography and ultrasound. Our boarding facility contains over 100 kennels as well as a separate isolation ward for sick animals and a separate cat ward for our feline friends.

SAH is a long-standing certified member of the American Animal Hospital Association (“AAHA”). AAHA is a national organization that requires high standards for its member hospitals. These standards are above and beyond the Commonwealth of Virginia's Health Profession's mandated regulations. Extensive, periodic, onsite, full-day hospital inspections occur randomly every other year. Only 17% of animal hospitals nationwide are AAHA certified! Being a member of AAHA signifies participation in high quality small animal practice and progressive veterinary care.

We continue to upgrade our computer and equipment systems. We have recently completed a major computer system upgrade to a 'paper-less' 10 station Avimark network. We have also recently converted to digital radiography! We now use a 5 station system based on the most advanced software version of Sound Technologies' Tru-DR Digital X-Ray System. To compliment the system a 25 inch flat screen LCD monitor was added to further enhance your pet's X-Rays.

At Springfield Animal Hospital we strive to offer not only sound advice, but also optimal veterinary care, thus allowing you the enjoyment of your companion for a maximum number of years. Our job is not only to treat your pet when he or she isn't feeling well, but also to help you learn how to keep your best friend happy and healthy.
